HIGH VIEWS AND NEWS
VOLUME XII ISSUE I MAY 2011
Welcome all to another exciting season for HCWS! Now with more than 100 members, our club unites beginners and professional artists in promoting the visual arts within the High Country. Join us at 9:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month at Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff in Boone for our morning meetings which include an artist’s demo and refreshments.
Our HCWS Spring Show at the Broyhill Inn and Appalachian Conference Center is now on display. Many thanks to Pam Smith and her committee for hanging paintings in the Jackson Dining Room. We appreciate General Manager Douglas Uzelac offering exhibit space at this prominent ASU venue.
You’ll find Nell Kline, our HCWS program director, presents a diverse series of six workshops with new faces, in addition to familiar instructors returning. Spaces are still available, yet limited. Workshops provide a three-hour session of instruction and remain one of the most affordable classes in the area. Thanks to our partnership with Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff in Boone, we benefit from a friendly staff just a step outside the door along with an exceptional choice of art supplies.
We are honored to support the local community through our endowment award program spearheaded by Board Director Bettie Bond. When you donate to HCWS endowment, you’re helping the arts remain a vital part of education for many.
Our newly designed web site now includes news to keep you posted on arts events and organizations. Forward your questions and announcements to info@HighCountryWatermediaSociety.com.
Please thank volunteer JoAnn Pippin and Beth Andrews, newsletter editor/ board member for keeping us up-to-date.
For 2011, the new treasurer is Marilyn Herman of Newland. Judy Clarke will serve as vice president. Beth Andrews, Bettie Bond, Nell Kline, Inge Mahler, Barbara Quatrano, Judy Prevost and Adrienne Sherrow complete the board roster. Annual membership dues will remain only $30.
The High Country Watermedia Society will help improve your skills, introduce you to new friends, and inspire your creative spirit. See you on Saturday, May 14!

Alexis Lavine Demo Artist for May
Alexis Lavine loves to create watercolors in her studio, using photos for ideas and inspiration. But she never just copies her photos ... instead she manipulates them, interprets them, combines, edits, and drastically changes them ... to end up with paintings that look nothing like the photos which gave them their humble start. She thinks it is quite fascinating and satisfying to start with a handful of photos, which are pretty good, or maybe pretty bad ... and end up with a painting that is way more interesting and evocative than the photos, and is a truly original and personal statement.
In this workshop Alexis will share with you some of her ideas and methods of working with photos. You will learn how to re-use old photos in new ways, and how to find paint-worthy subjects in photos that you might have previously considered to be lost causes! Alexis is a watercolor painter but this workshop is for ALL painters, working in ALL media ... who want to expand and enhance their own use of photographic references.
All you need to bring with you for this workshop are:
- your usual supplies, in your choice of media, (but be sure to bring a sketchbook)
- a bunch of your own photos, good, bad, or indifferent (but please bring your own photos, not photos from magazines, calendars, or other people’s cameras!) - and a sense of adventure and exploration!
Alexis began her art career with a Masters degree in Medical Illustration from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. However, since 1980 she has devoted most of her artistic energy to watercolor painting. Her award winning paintings have been included in numerous juried and gallery exhibitions, and they hang in private and corporate collections throughout the country, as well as overseas. She is a signature member of the National Association of Women Artists, the Baltimore Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of North Carolina, and the Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society, and she is a founding member of The Western Maryland Watercolor Society. She is represented by galleries from Philadelphia all the way south to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Alexis has thousands of photographs of all kinds of places, people, and things ... from her backyard ... to places on other continents. Many were taken with cameras that used film - remember that? - and thousands more are now stored digitally on her computer. You do not need to be a computer wiz or even own a computer or digital camera to benefit from this workshop! We’ll be relying on good old-fashioned drawing, designing, and imagination when working with our photos!

We are really going online this year. At last, we have our own web hero, JoAnn Pippin. Please take a look at our revitalized website. JoAnn has been working diligently to get the site with a new host and she has been working hard to get all the important elements we want for our website up and running. Going forward, you will access your newsletters (current and past) on our website. This is our last printed edition (saying goodbye to hours of folding, labeling and tabbing).
Many thanks to Terry Henry, artist and graphic designer at Cheap Joe’s... and our champion for many years as he has generously done everything from print out our newsletters to setting up our original website. He and Cheap Joe’s have been so supportive of High Country Watermedia Society on many levels...including our very wonderful meeting/workshop space.
